BS 25999

Business continuity is a key to the company success.

As all know, breakdowns and failures are and will be force majeure events which cannot be foreseen. The basic task of the business continuity management is to avoid breakdowns and failures in the disaster recovery. It would be sufficient to only outline several scenarios for the partial or full recovery of operations, with the unambiguous determination of the maximum time for the restoring of the system for operations.

 Another way to deal with loss minimisation, which the company may incur due to a breakdown or a disaster, is the outlining of scenarios of how to reduce to a minimum the impact of the breakdown by alternative scenarios of implementation of business processes. Undoubtedly, it is not easy to do. But one should always remember that the awareness of the level of risk and the pre-defined mechanisms to manage these risks may be a value in its own right. It is so as they provide a sense of professional control over the company under crisis. In other words: although it is not possible to have control over incidental failures, it is possible to plan quick and effective methods of remedying their consequences.

BS 25999 is the world’s first British standard for business continuity management (BCM), which is meant to keep your business going in the most challenging and unexpected circumstances – protecting the personnel, preserving the company’s reputation and sustaining the operations and trading ability.

BS 25999 is suitable for any organization, large or small, from any sector.

In order to make your company prepared for this type of events, we propose to develop and implement the business continuity management process. The implementation project incorporates four basic stages:

I. Defining your requirements in the scope of business continuity management processes in crisis situations and the assessment of the risk related to crisis occurrence.

II. Defining a business continuity strategy incorporating;
   - the approach toward crisis management in the company
   - the assurance of required availability of resources of an enterprise
   - the assurance of the proper communication within the organisation and with external entities in case of a crisis situation
III. Development and implementation of business continuity plans whose implementation in a crisis situation will make it possible to support both the implementation of the processes that are critical for the company and the minimisation of losses, and at a later stage will allow to reconstruct resources and restore normal activity.

IV. Development and implementation of the business continuity management principles in your company, including:
   - education in the scope of required activities related to business continuity assurance
   - control and management of changes in the strategy and business continuity plans
   - testing of business continuity plans effectiveness

Wishing to avoid an interruption in business continuity, we need to know how to deal in the event of a major catastrophe or a minor incident. We have to guarantee the ability to provide services or manufacture products not only prior but also during and after the incident. To do so, we need to have pre-developed and well tested business continuity plans.
